Worship by ZOOM – Sunday July 12, 2020

Order of Service – Sunday July 12, 2020 @ 10:30AM

As we prepare our hearts and minds for worship, I’d invite you listen to this song as a way of preparing for worship this morning. It was recommended by our guest from a couple of weeks ago, Marva Wisdom.

“Blinded By Your Grace” – The Kingdom Choir

St. Andrew’s Territorial Acknowledgement

As we gather, we acknowledge that Indigenous people were here long before us who cared for this land and called it home.  This territory has a rich history and was, and is to this day, considered sacred by many First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples.  We have a responsibility to care for this land as their ancestors did and to continue to strengthen our relationships with our Indigenous neighbours.

An Important Update from Our Leadership regarding Reopening and Worship Online for the Summer – June 2020

Please read this notice from Rev. John regarding our plans for reopening to in-person gatherings at St. Andrew’s and our decision to hold worship by ZOOM exclusively until at least September 13, 2020.

An IMPORTANT UPDATE from Our Leadership
You will now be very much aware that the Government of Ontario announced earlier this week that places of worship may reopen at 30% of their space’s capacity. Some places of worship have taken steps to reopen this week and a few others are planning to reopen as soon as next week.

Our Leadership (Session and Board) decided early on to ensure that we would make plans and decisions about reopening on our own terms as guided by government and public health authorities. We knew that this day would come where the Government would announce that we can reopen with restrictions. We didn’t wish to be pressured into reopening simply because we’ve been told that we can. The safety and health of our members and our guests, as well as our staff, are our priority as we give consideration to this ever changing situation.

To that end, the Session of St. Andrew’s Guelph agreed that we will continue worshiping online until at least Sunday September 13. Interestingly, this decision falls in line with our sisters and brothers in the United and Anglican churches in Guelph and beyond. Our church building will not be open until we have made the necessary preparations for in-person gatherings. Over the summer, a newly formed group of members from the Session and Board called the Reopening Task Force will review guidelines and directions from various sources including our own Public Health Unit and formulate a plan for a phased reopening of St. Andrew’s. They will be ordering supplies, signage and other necessary items in order to be prepared for in-person gatherings. Special consideration will be given to the sanctuary to determine how we best facilitate physical distancing (about 2 metres) between individuals and family units. We will take the time necessary to be prepared, planful, and preventative. The Old Stone Churches, of which St. Andrew’s is a part, have a meeting with the Medical Officers of Health for Guelph Wellington and Dufferin this week to discuss best practices and gain their insight into our plans for future reopening. We will not make any decisions without their expertise and direction. Again, your safety, and the health of our guests, and our wider community is of greatest importance to us as we take our next best steps.

From time to time, we will provide updates of the work of the Reopening Task Force. Please keep them in your prayers.

Thanks for your understanding as we live into this decision today. Much has changed for all of us. It has been a challenging time. For a community who seeks to love our neighbours as ourselves, the best way to show that love in the midst of a pandemic is to limit our in-person gatherings and prevent the spread of this virus to those very neighbours. So please, join us ONLINE for the Summer from your homes, or wherever your summer plans may find you. Tell your friends to join us too. Perhaps someone new will find a place to call home as we worship online.

In Christ’s service,

Rev. John Borthwick
Minister | St. Andrew’s Guelph

For CHILDREN and the “YOUNG at Heart”

Illustrated Ministry Resources

During this time of isolation, Illustrated Ministry has offered a sampling of its worship resources for children (and the young at heart) for FREE. Unfortunately, this Sunday’s resource will be the last one. I (Rev. John) am contemplating purchasing their online resource for the Summer, if there is enough interest from the congregation. Alternatively, I’d encourage parents and anyone interested to check their website regularly for updates on their resources for families. They are even planning a Virtual VBS that can be purchased by individuals. Here’s the link for that: https://www.illustratedministry.com/vbs/

In the meantime, get your crayons ready!

Here’s the colouring page for Pentecost: https://convertkit.s3.amazonaws.com/landing_pages/incentives/000/467/334/original/PentecostColoring.pdf?1588810487

Hope to see those brightly coloured flames on Sunday morning by ZOOM.

After worship this morning, I’d invite you to watch these clips. The first is a bit of an investment – the Polish composer Gorecki’s Symphony No. 3 is supposedly inspired in part by Lamentations. And the second is something a little more uplifting for Ascension Sunday… the hymn “Crown Him With Many Crowns” from an interesting venue!

St. Andrew’s COVID Lament: A Communal Creative Writing Project – May 2020

While studying the Book of Lamentations during this season of COVID-19, our congregation was invited to submit a line or two of prose expressing their thoughts, feelings and experience of this time of COVID isolation. I compiled and edited the submissions creating “St. Andrew’s COVID Lament”. I sought to be faithful to the poetic form found in the Book of Lamentations called Acrostic – meaning each verse begins with a successive letter of the Hebrew Alphabet of which there are 22 letters. Our lament stretches to 26 letters in line with our alphabet. Thank you for your heartfelt submissions… it is a powerful lament! ~ Rev. John

St. Andrew’s COVID Lament: A Communal Creative Writing Project – May 2020

Although we are accomplishing a lot with this time of confinement, there is much we are missing.

Being with other people – remember when we used to gather in groups – but not just any people,

Children, I miss my kids, my grandkids, my parents, and my friends.

Dogs too. Let’s not forget them. And alright, we can say cats as well.

Except for some of us, our pets have our undivided attention now and are our source of companionship in this time of isolation.

Forgotten is what many of us feel. Forgotten while some are praised as heroes, but we are not. Forgotten by family and friends who are overwhelmed by many things – like on some forgotten highway being passed by many but remembered by few. And most poignantly, forgotten by you.

God. Have you forgotten us? Do you still remember us? Do you see what we are going through?

Here, is where we want you, O God. Right here with us – beside us.

I don’t feel your presence. I miss you. Do you miss me too?

Joy is so hard to find.

Keep faith, hope, and love alive. Don’t let their light be extinguished.

Lonely are the streets. Lonely are the open spaces. Lonely are the churches. Lonely are our homes.

Masked humanity enters banks and stores.

New normal – that’s what it is called. But there is nothing normal about this reality we are facing.

Overwhelm comes in waves like a tsunami at times.

PPE is our rallying cry.

Quiet fills our days and nights.

Remember us, O Lord.

Strength and courage to survive – to make it through – is what we desire most.

Thy will be done? Really. We’ve taken some dark paths as we’ve sought to understand what we are facing.

Understanding would be as sweet as honey. We wish for someone who understands us. Someone to reach out to us. Who will listen to us?

Vulnerable God, you became weak for our sakes.

Wounded by our hatred and our love for violence. You know this life. You know what abandonment feels like.

Xenophobia is on the rise. May we not place you in the same category as stranger. May we not fear you too, O God.

You carried us, O Lord. At least that’s what that poem called Footprints says: “When you saw only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.” Please let this be such a time.

Zest for life will return. We will not be isolated forever.
